Stand Up Paddleboarding!
I’m a big believer in trying everything once. I’ve surfed, eaten pulpo (octopus in Spain. Bleh.), online dated. Sometimes I love it. Other times I hate it, but at least I figure I’ll get a good story out of it!
Today my friends and I decided to try our hands at stand up paddleboarding, or SUP, if you’re cooler than I am. We rented from Great Lakes Board Company off North Street Beach. They charge $25/hour, which seemed reasonable (Full disclosure/foreshadowing: we bought a LivingSocial for TWO hours for $25…I thought it was a great deal at the time.).
It was definitely an adventure. Bright blue day, skyline was gorgeous, the waves were huge…Wait, what did I sign up for?! The guy at GLBC warned us there was “a light southerly wind,” and that we should practice going into the wind before we paddled too far down the beach. Rationally, I know Chicago gets whomped by waves a lot of the year, but I was honestly surprised by how choppy it was!
We paddled about 45 minutes before heading back towards shore, where there were smaller waves, and an opportunity to mess around with the camera. So much for the two hour rental! In the end, I really did have a lot of fun, even messing around with SUPyo (yoga on a standup paddleboard), floating around, and being a ham for the camera. It was a great day!
What kind of adventures are you having with these last crazy days of summer?
